LIBYA

Deal nears for 14 Rafale combat aircraft

Negotiations over a contract for the Libyan Air Force to purchase 14 French Dassault Aviation Rafale F3 combat aircraft are now virtually complete, and the announcement of the deal is now a question of political timing, according to a French industry executive.

A weapons package for the Libyan Rafales is being negotiated separately and missiles house MBDA France expects it to include a large number of Air-to-Air and Air-to-Surface Missiles (AAMs and ASMs). This contract is likely to be signed in 2009 or 2010.
