Finalists for Flycatcher radar replacement

The two finalists in the US$300 million Indian Army competition for 66 mobile air defence radars to replace the Thales Nederland Flycatcher, licence produced by Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL), have been identified as the Elta Systems subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and France’s Thales.

Trials will be held in the next two to three months, at the manufacturers’ expense, after which the winner will begin the final round of price negotiations. The contract is expected to be signed in 2010. The new radar system will also be manufactured in-country by BEL and will be mounted on a high mobility vehicle.

The winning shelter-mounted system will have a 3-D search radar, a tracking radar, an Electro-Optical sensor for passive tracking, a weapon control unit for short-range Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs) and AA guns, and an integral power supply. The radars should have a maximum target detection and tracking range of not less than 10km and a minimum altitude of 30m.
