New fighter procurement delayed

Due to the global financial crisis, the Croatian National Defence Council decided at the end of February to postpone the issuance of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for 12-18 NATO-compatible fighter aircraft for at least two, and possibly as many as five years.

The new combat aircraft had been expected to enter service with the Croatian Air Force from 2011 to 2015, under a program valued at some HRK 5 billion (US$844 million). Bidders are expected to include: Lockheed Martin, with either new-build or second-hand F-16C/D Block 52s; Saab, with either new-build or second-hand JAS-39C/D Gripens; Dassault Aviation, offering second-hand Mirage 2000-5s; and RSK MiG, proposing rebuilt MiG-29M2s.
