CFB Esquimalt defence infrastructure
On March 13, Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, announced several infrastructure projects for Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt.
This investment of more than C$266 million (US$215 million) includes:
· Phase IV work that will continue the modernisation of the Fleet Maintenance Facility, Cape Breton (FMF Cape Breton) at the Esquimalt Dockyard, with the final Phase V to be completed by 2015. The Phase IV construction contract will be tendered within the next few months;
· a C$2.3 million contract award, to Stantec Consultants Ltd., to design new Maritime Helicopter Squadron facilities located at Patricia Bay, British Colombia, including a new hangar and an outdoor parking area for five aircraft;
· a C$14.5 million contract, to Kinetic Construction, to build a new, modern facility for the safe storage and general handling of hazardous materials. Construction is scheduled for completion by summer 2010; and finally
· a DND plan to contribute C$2.4 million to the Corporation of the Township of Esquimault, which will assume responsibility for upgrading, managing and maintaining the entire Admirals Cove / Colville intersection.
