RFP for long-range air surveillance radars

Under a program to modernise the Iraqi Air Force’s Command and Control (C2) infrastructure, managed by the Multinational Security Transition Command – Iraq, Requests for Proposals (RFPs) are to be issued in May for 3-4 long range air surveillance radars and Sector Operations Centers (SOCs). The new, 322km-range radars would cover Iraq’s sensitive southern tip, the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, providing the capability to detect incoming air traffic, air sovereignty and an air picture for the military or the Government.

The Iraqi Air Force already has an Air Operations Center (AOC), which will act as the hub into which the data from the long-range radars will be fed by the SOCs. Eventually, the radars will be linked into a nation-wide C2 infrastructure known as the Iraqi Air Force Information Infrastructure Project (I3P). This will serve as the backbone for information flow, permitting Iraqi air bases to communicate with transport, surveillance and fighter aircraft, defensive Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) systems and the AOC.
