Contender for ARED airspace surveillance contract

Germany’s Rheinmetall AG and the UK’s BAE Systems have agreed to cooperate on an advanced radar system, in the competition for the German Air Force’s ARED airspace surveillance contract.

ARED calls for six radars, covering the entire country, to be installed from 2012. The BWB national armaments directorate issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) in February for the five-year contract, which is valued at more than €100 million (US$133.4 million).

If Rheinmetall wins the order, the company will serve as prime contractor for the entire ground infrastructure, including integration and installation of the systems. BAE Systems will be responsible for supplying the Commander SL radar sensor technology, which is already in service with the Royal Air Force in the UK.
