NATO-compatible SAM system

To replace the Finnish Army’s 18 launchers for Russian-supplied, 35km-range NIIP Buk-1M (NATO designation: SA-11 Gadfly) Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) systems, which are understood to be vulnerable to jamming, the Finnish Defence Ministry is now reported to be on the point of making its decision on which NATO-compatible SAM system to acquire.

The choice is said to be between the 25km-range NASAMS from Norway’s Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and the 100km-range Franco-Italian EuroSAM SAMP/T. The contract is expected to be worth at least €400 million (US$533.6 million).
