New fighter program cut-back?

Due to budgetary constraints, the Romanian Air Force is likely to have to reduce the number of new fighters it selects this year from the previous 48 to 24 aircraft. The new fighters are to start replacing the Air Force’s MiG-21 Lancers from 2011 or 2012.

Earlier this year, the Romanian Ministry of Defence received responses to its Request for Information (RfI) on 48 new fighters from: Boeing (F/A-18E/F Super Hornet); Dassault Aviation (Rafale); Eurofighter (Typhoon); Lockheed Martin (F-16C/D); and Saab (JAS-39 Gripen C/D). © DAPSS  S.A., 2008, Switzerland
