Competition for five MALE UAVs

The German BWB national armaments directorate has launched a competition to supply the German Air Force with five Medium Altitude, Long Endurance (MALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for real-time theatre surveillance and reconnaissance missions by 2010. The two contenders are the American General Atomics Predator B and the Israel Aerospace Industries Heron TP.

The new MALE UAVs will supplement five Northrop Grumman / EADS Eurohawk High Altitude, Long Endurance (HALE) UAVs, already under contract, which will perform Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) for the German Air Force. The Eurohawk is based on Northrop Grumman’s Global Hawk.

Both the MALE UAVs and the HALE UAVs are being procured under the System zur Abbildenden Aufklärung in der Tiefe des EinsatzGebietes (SAATEG) program. © DAPSS  S.A., 2008, Switzerland
