New Artillery Fuzing System

On March 26, the UK Ministry of Defence awarded Junghans Microtec, a subsidiary of Germany’s Diehl BGT Defence, a contract – of undisclosed value – for the demonstration, qualification and supply of a new Artillery Fuzing System (AFS) for use with existing and future munitions by the British Army’s 105mm Light Gun and 155mm AS90 Self-Propelled Howitzer.

The contract covers the qualification of two fuze types and fuze setter, plus provision for the supply of products. Initially, an order for 145,000 fuzes and 500 fuze setters has been placed, with a procurement option for further quantities.

The two fuze types are: a Multi-Option Fuze, designed to optimise the performance of High Explosive (HE) shells; and an Electronic Time Fuze for use with other ammunition types including smoke screening and illumination. Inductive fuze setters will be procured in order to program the fuzes. The procurement of the fuze setters is combined with a maintenance contract. © DAPSS  S.A., 2008, Switzerland
