PAKISTAN

Launch of first F-22P Sword class frigate

PNS Zulifqar, the first of four F-22P Sword class frigates ordered in 2005 from the Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai, under a US$750 million contract, was launched on April 7. The first three frigates will be built in Shanghai, while the fourth will be constructed in Pakistan by Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works.

The 2,250t frigates are based on the Chinese Jangwei II class, powered by two diesel engines developing 24,000hp, for a maximum speed of 27kts and a range of 4,000nmi at 18kts. They are armed with: two triple launchers for subsonic, 120km-range C-802 Ship-to-Ship Missiles (SSMs); an octuple launcher for 13km-range HQ-7 (Crotale) Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs); a 76mm forward gun turret; two triple launchers for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) torpedoes; and facilities for a Z-9A Dauphin helicopter. © DAPSS  S.A., 2008, Switzerland
