MOROCCO

FREMM frigate contract

On April 18 in Rabat, French Prime Minister François Fillon confirmed that the DCNS shipyard group has finalised a contract with the Royal Moroccan Navy for a 6,000t multi-mission FREMM frigate. He gave no details concerning the value of the order, the equipment fit or the planned delivery date.

DCNS CEO and Executive Vice President Bernard Planchais commented: “We welcome the decision by Morocco’s highest authorities in favour of the DCNS-designed FREMM frigate to modernise their fleet. This ship will benefit from the many advances arising from the FREMM program to produce a new generation of front-line vessels for the French Navy. Morocco is our first international customer for this new generation vessel.”

The French Navy has so far ordered eight FREMMs and the Italian Navy another six, out of a total 27 of the multi-mission frigates planned for the two fleets. DCNS is the prime contractor for the French Navy FREMMs, which are armed with state-of-the-art weapons and systems including the Herakles multifunction radar, MU90 torpedoes, Exocet MM40 Ship-to-Ship Missiles (SSMs) and Aster Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs). © DAPSS  S.A., 2008, Switzerland
