Four Project 28 ASW corvettes

Under a contract valued at some Rupees 2.8 billion crores (US$700.78 million) awarded in 2003, Garden Reach Ship Builders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), of Kolkata, expects to hand over the first of four Project 28 Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) corvettes to the Indian Navy in mid-2009. For some unexplained reason, steel cutting for the lead ship started only on August 12, 2005. The three subsequent ships will be delivered at intervals of 15-18 months.

Displacing 2,500t and measuring 110m in length, each corvette will be powered by four raft-mounted French Pielstick 12 PA6 STC engines, delivering a total of 17,080kW, for a maximum speed of 28-32kts. Special attention has been given to reducing acoustic, magnetic, Infra-Red and radar cross-section signatures. Details of the radar, sonar and electronics fit have not yet been released.

Armament will include: one licence produced Oto Melara 76mm Super Rapid gun in a stealth mount; 6-8 vertically launched, 300km-range Novator 3M-54E Klub-N (SS-N-27 Sizzler) anti-ship missiles; vertically-launched Israeli Rafael Barak Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs); two Larsen & Toubro RBU-6000 ASW rocket launchers; two triple Larsen & Toubro ASW torpedo launchers; and one Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter. © DAPSS  S.A., 2008, Switzerland
